When the Portal Blinked: Inside Maharashtra CAP Registration Extended 2026 and What Students Should Do Next
Ritika Deshmukh had already made peace with it.
On the evening of July 12, the Pune student sat staring at a half-filled CAP application, a JEE Main percentile field that refused to populate, and a countdown that said the window had closed. She had a printout of her domicile certificate on the table and no way to attach it. Her father suggested they start looking at management quota seats.
Four days later, the CET Cell pushed the deadline out by a full week.
Ritika’s story is not unusual this admission season. The original CAP registration deadline was July 12, with the final merit list scheduled for July 20 — a schedule that collapsed under a technical problem no student could have solved on their own.

Registration is over. Verification is not. Those are two different things — and the difference decides whether your name appears on July 22.
What Actually Broke
The trigger was not server load, and it was not students being slow.
A JEE Main percentile fetch issue affected candidates using their JEE score for CAP, and the CET Cell later confirmed the problem was resolved and asked affected candidates to update their applications. For a subset of applicants — mostly All India candidates and Maharashtra students holding both scores — the field that should have auto-populated simply did not.
There was a second pressure point. From 2026 onwards, Aadhaar-based eKYC authentication and APAAR ID registration became mandatory at the time of application, and candidates who had not linked their APAAR ID could not complete registration at all. Students discovering this requirement in the final 48 hours had to route through DigiLocker to generate an ID before they could even reach the upload screen.
Neither of these was a student failure. Both cost real days.
What This Extension Actually Means
The CET Cell extended CAP registration to July 19, with document verification — online or offline — running to July 20. The provisional merit list follows on July 22, grievances can be raised until July 25, and the final merit list publishes on July 27 after objections are processed.
Read that sequence carefully, because a deadline extension is not a pause button. Every downstream date moved with it, and the compressed gap between merit list and objection window is where students get hurt.

The Verification Trap Nobody Warns You About
Here is the sentence that should worry anyone who submitted on July 18 or 19:
Registration and verification are two different events. Submitting the form does not put you on the merit list. Verification does.
Candidates must complete verification through either E-Scrutiny (online) or Physical Scrutiny at a designated Facilitation Centre, and both routes close on July 20.

Students who registered late and assumed the confirmation email meant they were done are the group most likely to find their name missing from the July 22 provisional list. By then the only remedy is the grievance window — a three-day corridor, not a second chance at admission.
Expert insight: In Maharashtra’s CAP process, seats are rarely lost at the percentile stage. They are lost at scrutiny — an unverified application, a mismatched category certificate, a domicile document that was uploaded but never confirmed. The merit list does not care how well you scored if your file was never validated.
Students Who Should Be Paying Extra Attention Right Now
JEE Main candidates. You are the group the extension was designed for. If your percentile did not fetch correctly the first time, log in and confirm the field now displays your actual score. Separate merit lists are prepared for MHT CET and JEE Main candidates — an incorrect percentile places you wrongly in a list you cannot switch out of later.
Out-of-Maharashtra (OMS) applicants. A valid Maharashtra domicile certificate is required for state quota seats in government and aided colleges; OMS candidates without domicile cannot claim state quota seats and compete for remaining open seats instead. Verify which pool your application has actually placed you in.
SC/ST/OBC/VJNT/NT candidates. A caste certificate is not the same as a caste validity certificate. Applications carrying one but not the other routinely get downgraded to open category at scrutiny — and the student finds out on merit list day, not before.
EWS applicants. The income certificate must be in the current prescribed state format and within its validity period. Last year’s certificate is a common and expensive mistake.
TFWS aspirants. Your income documentation has to survive scrutiny before choice filling, not during it. TFWS claims are settled against your verified profile.
Minority quota candidates. Institute-level minority claims need the supporting certificate attached at CAP stage. Adding it later is not an option the system offers.
Anyone still waiting on a document. If a certificate has not been issued, do not sit on it silently. Verify what you have, then use the grievance window on July 22–25 with proof of application.
Who Doesn’t Need to Worry
If you registered before July 10, completed E-Scrutiny or visited a Facilitation Centre, and your dashboard status reads verified — you are done with this phase. Nothing on this page requires action from you today.
Two things still deserve ten minutes of your time:
Open the provisional merit list on July 22 anyway. Verified applications can still carry data errors — a misspelt name, a category recorded incorrectly, a percentile that transferred wrong. The grievance window exists for exactly this, and it is the last time any of it can be changed.
Start building your preference list now. You have five clear days before choice filling that late registrants do not. Use them to research cut-offs and compare colleges properly instead of doing it against a clock. That is a real advantage — most students waste it.

Mistakes That Follow Every Extension
Assuming a fourth extension is coming. In 2025 the CET Cell extended three times before holding firm. Planning around a hypothetical extension is how students end up outside CAP entirely. Applications submitted after the final deadline are considered only for non-CAP seats.
Treating the confirmation email as the finish line. It confirms submission. Scrutiny is separate.
Uploading unreadable scans. A blurred caste certificate fails scrutiny exactly as completely as a missing one.
Ignoring the provisional merit list. July 22 to 25 is the only window in the entire process where a data error can be fixed. After July 27, your State Merit Number is final.
Using a parent’s or sibling’s contact details. Allotment notifications are time-bound. Missing one costs a round.
What Happens Next
After the final merit list publishes on July 27, the process shifts from paperwork to strategy.
Choice filling opens for each CAP round separately, and this is where most students underprepare. Since seat allotment is done on the basis of the choice-filling process, candidates are advised to fill the option form carefully. A short preference list is the single most common self-inflicted wound in Maharashtra counselling — fill generously, order honestly, and do not omit a college you would actually attend.
After allotment, candidates confirm the seat by exercising the freeze, float or slide option and paying the seat acceptance fee. Understand these three before allotment day, not during it. Freeze ends your participation. Float keeps you in for both a better college and a better branch. Slide keeps you at the same institute but open to a branch upgrade.
Four rounds of choice filling and seat allotment are scheduled, followed by institute-level reporting with original documents.
Two Questions Students Keep Asking
Can CAP registration be reopened again?
It is possible but should not be planned for. The CET Cell extended three separate times in 2025 before holding the line, and each extension came in response to a documented technical failure — not to accommodate late applicants. The 2026 extension was issued to fix a percentile fetch problem the Cell itself acknowledged. With that resolved and the merit list schedule already compressed, there is no operational reason to move again. Students who missed July 19 should focus on institute-level and non-CAP seats rather than waiting for a notification that probably will not come.
What if my document verification is incomplete when the deadline passes?
Your application will not enter the provisional merit list. Raise a grievance during the July 22–25 window with your receipt-cum-acknowledgement and proof of any pending certificate. This is a remedy, not a guarantee — outcomes depend on what was missing and why. Simultaneously, start identifying institute-level vacancy seats as a parallel track.
Your Next 48 Hours
Today (July 20): Log in. Confirm your status shows verified. If it does not, get to a Facilitation Centre before the window closes.
July 22: Open the provisional merit list the day it publishes. Check name, category, domicile status, percentile and merit number — every field, not just the rank.
July 22–25: If anything is wrong, raise the grievance with supporting documents. Do not wait for the last afternoon; grievance servers behave exactly like registration servers.
July 27: Download the final merit list and save your State Merit Number.
Before choice filling opens: Build your preference list on paper first. Research closing percentiles by college and branch. Decide your freeze/float/slide position in advance, while you can still think clearly.
The extension bought students a week. It did not change what the process rewards — which is, as always, the applicant who verified early, checked the merit list on day one, and filled choices like the outcome mattered.
